Experimental introduction of borough-wide 20 m.p.h. speed limits
Feedback updated 12 Apr 2022
We asked
We asked for views on the experimental introduction of a 20mph speed limit across the Borough except any lengths of road that are part of the Transport for London (TfL) Road Network, which are subject to speed limits set by TfL and any lengths of road that currently operate a 20mph speed limit courtesy of a separate Traffic Order (either on an experimental or permanent basis).
You said
The majority of responses supported the boroughwide 20mph limit and felt that it had made the roads safer, especially for walking and cycling. Some respondents were concerned about the appearance of the speed limit signs, and that lower speed limits would increase pollution, though most studies agree there is no net impact on pollution as a result of a 20mph speed limit.
We did
We have made this experimental order permanent so it will continue indefinitely.
Overview
The Council is imposing a speed limit of 20 miles per hour (mph) in the roads or lengths of roads listed in the Schedule to this Notice (excluding any length that is Greater London Authority side road). This includes all publicly maintained roads within the borough and certain lengths of boundary roads that are shared in part with the City of Westminster, excluding any lengths of roads that are part of the Transport for London (TfL) Road Network, which are subject to speed limits set by TfL and any lengths of road that currently operate a 20mph speed limit (either on an experimental or permanent basis).
Why your views matter
We want to understand how the reduction in the speed limits is working in practice. You can view more information, including answers to some frequently asked questions on the Council's Borough-wide 20mph speed limit page.
Further details, including the notice and map can be found on the Council's Traffic Management Order website. You can also find out more on the proposals and send your comments to 20mph@rbkc.gov.uk.
