Basil Street Public Realm Improvements

Closed 12 Oct 2023

Opened 31 Aug 2023

Overview

The section of Basil Street east of Pavilion Road has been closed since 2019 to facilitate the building of the “K1 Development”, the prominent building on the corner of Sloane Street and Brompton Road. In 2020, the Council consulted on the principle of making this closure permanent. Most respondents to the consultation supported this proposition. Earlier this year, the Council made a traffic order to close the junction of Sloane Street and Basil Street on a permanent basis to facilitate the delivery of a streetscape scheme.

Council officers have been working closely with the landowner of the Knightsbridge Estate to develop a streetscape improvement proposal for Basil Street, between the junctions with Pavilion Road and Sloane Street. The proposal would significantly enhance the public realm for the local community to enjoy and improve pedestrian accessibility to the new step free access entrance to Knightsbridge tube station, located on Hoopers Court. This scheme will be funded by the K1 developer at no cost to the Council.

Please read the following information carefully before filling in our consultation survey no later than 12 October 2023.

Why your views matter

We're interested on your views on the proposed design.

The main features of the proposed scheme, illustrated below, are:

  • Extending the Sloane Street footway across the mouth of Basil Street to prevent motorised traffic from accessing that area. (The traffic order giving legal effect to the closure of the junction is already in place).
  • Repaving of the footways and carriageway in natural stone between Pavilion Road and Sloane Street to provide an improved public space, attractive to pedestrians and cyclists.
  • An improved, wider, signalised crossing for pedestrians on Sloane Street. This facility could also be used by cyclists to safely access the roadway on Sloane Street.
  • Raised carriageway and introduction of high-quality paving to help reduce traffic speeds for vehicles accessing basement car park and to improve pedestrian access to underground step free access on Hooper’s Court.
  • Introduction of trees and planters to enhance biodiversity and placemaking (subject to satisfactory site investigations).
  • Space to accommodate a seasonal art feature.
