Grenfell Nursery Road Safety Scheme

Closed 6 Nov 2024

Opened 25 Sep 2024

Overview

Notting Dale is one of just two neighbourhoods in London to be selected as part of the Mayor of London’s Future Neighbourhoods 2030 programme, aiming to deliver a range of environmental projects and initiatives, alongside the development of a community-led environmental strategy.

The Council and the Mayor of London are funding work with residents to transform Notting Dale into a neighbourhood that is greener, fairer and more climate resilient for all by 2030. Over 40 initiatives are being delivered in partnership by the Council, Local and Regional Partners and local residents.

Included within the programme is a public realm scheme to improve safety and create a more pleasant environment outside Grenfell Nursery, on the corner of Clarendon Road and Dulford Street.

In April 2023, Grenfell Early Years Nursery re-opened at its newly expanded and refurbished site. However, the nursery manager, along with local residents with young children at the nursery, have highlighted safety concerns directly outside the nursery, such as poor parking on Clarendon Road, with vehicles idling outside the nursery and mounting the pavement to park, and water pooling at the kerb.

The Council is consulting on a scheme seeking to address these concerns by installing a raised table on Clarendon Road to slow vehicles, create a continuation with the pavements on either end and provide two new crossing points. New footway extentions, footway paving and drainage work will reduce and mitigate any water pooling, improving the site during the rainy months. The planting of new trees will increase the greening of the area, creating well-needed shading and temperature control.

We’re interested in your views and you can take part in the consultation until Wednesday 6 November 2024.

Why your views matter

We're interested in your views on the proposed design for Clarendon Road/Dulford Street.

The main features of the proposed scheme, illustrated below, are:

  • Wider footways, giving more space to pedestrians
  • Narrower carriageway and introduction of a raised table where Clarendon Road meets Dulford Street, to encourage slower speeds and discourage parking directly outside the nursery.
  • Creation of two new crossing points
  • Raised planters to discourage parking on the corner and introduce trees and greening
  • Changes to parking and loading including;
    • Conversion of single yellow line to double yellow lines
    • Introduction of advisory 'school keep clear' markings
    • Conversion of four residents' parking spaces to double yellow line and footway extensions.

See the traffic order notice below for full details of the changes to parking and loading.
