King’s Road / Beaufort Street Proposed Signalised Crossings
Overview
Enabling more journeys on foot is one of the Council’s key objectives and helping to make it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross the road is an important part of meeting that objective.
Between 2020 and 2024, there were 25 casualties from collisions at the junction of A3217 King's Road/Beaufort Street, seven of which involved serious injuries. The Council is therefore proposing to make improvements to the signalised pedestrian crossings at this junction.
To make the junction safer, we are proposing to remove the staggered pedestrian crossing on the eastern arm of the junction and replace it with new, straight-across, signal-controlled pedestrian crossings over all four arms of the junction. The pavements on the eastern side Beaufort Street will be widened slightly, to give pedestrians more space and the traffic lanes on the western arm will be amended so the offside lane is only for traffic turning right, towards Battersea Bridge.
In 2020, the Council consulted on a similar scheme at this junction but that earlier proposal included a new banned left turn for eastbound traffic. Due to the banned turn, the proposals weren’t well supported, so we’ve gone back to the drawing board and these new proposals don’t include any new banned turns, though the existing banned turns will remain in place.
Please see below the plan of our proposed changes. You can zoom in to view the details, or download the file if needed.
