Portobello and Golborne Markets Sunday Trading 2026
Overview
Portobello Road is our famous market street that is rich in heritage, character and community and Golborne Road is a unique street that hosts a special mix of food, second hand and vintage stalls. We want to support the vibrancy and vitality of the markets for decades to come.
Last year, we asked residents, traders, businesses and visitors what they thought about Sunday Trading at both markets. Many people responded. Views were strong and mixed: some people welcomed the idea of more Sunday Markets, and others raised concerns. You can read a summary of the 2025 results here
What is the current situation?
Portobello Road Market opens on 11 Sundays a year: 8 Sundays between June and August, and 3 in December.
Golborne Road Market does not open on Sundays.
What’s new this year?
We have listened to what you told us in 2025 and developed a proposal for Sunday Markets that responds to some of the concerns raised.
Portobello Road Market – a midweek closure day: Holding the market on a Sunday affects road access and the local area. To balance this, if the frequency of Sunday Trading is increased, we propose a day off when the market would close one day on either Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays in weeks where it trades on a Sunday.
Golborne Road Market: We are not proposing a similar closure day at Golborne Road as it doesn't share the same access issues. We heard your views on Sunday Trading at Golborne Road in 2025. This time, we are only asking how often you would like a Sunday Market to run, if it goes ahead.
A new second-hand and vintage section on Sundays: In 2025 we asked what type of markets you'd like to see on Sundays. Since last year, we have received a new opportunity to curate a second-hand vintage section, and we'd like to know your thoughts. This would involve expanding the current Portobello Road Sunday Market to create a dedicated section, between Oxford Gardens and Golborne Road. Only second-hand traders would be offered pitches in this section, these traders would be allowed to park opposite their pitches.
Why your views matter
These proposals are new and respond to what people told us in 2025. That’s why we want to hear from you again, even if you took part last time.
We want to hear from everyone with an interest in the markets, including residents, traders, local businesses, shoppers and visitors. Changes to market days can affect people in different ways, so we’d like to understand what would work well for you and what concerns you might have.
