Overview

We want to hear your views on updating our Private Rented Sector Discharge Policy and Temporary Accommodation Placement Policy.

These are two separate policies which aim to deliver a fairer system for everyone. One explains how we decide where households are offered private rented homes to deliver our homelessness duty. The other explains how we decide where households are placed in temporary accommodation.

We want to offer good-quality housing that meets households' needs. However, there is very high demand for housing support in the borough, with around 1,900 households living in temporary accommodation and around 2,900 households on the Housing Register waiting to be rehoused. This means households can spend long periods in temporary accommodation without the stability of a settled home.

Kensington and Chelsea has some of the highest private rents in the country and very limited temporary accommodation, therefore most housing offers and placements are outside the borough and sometimes outside London.

We therefore need clear policies to help us decide which households have the greatest need to live in or close to the borough. The draft policies explain how these decisions are made and which households will be prioritised for accommodation in different areas.
