Future use of 15 Gertrude Street and 1-9 St Mark's Road
Overview
As a result of the Government’s Fair Funding plan and other financial pressures, Kensington and Chelsea face a loss of over £100 million over the next four years. The Council is having to look at all services it provides and how it provides them.
Part of this is looking at which buildings are needed and which buildings are no longer fit for purpose. In the 2026-2027 budget consultation, over 90 per cent of residents supported reviewing our property portfolio, optimising use of our buildings and minimising costs, which would help protect frontline services.
Reviewing services and the way they are delivered has identified two buildings that are not fit for purpose, no longer needed, and very expensive to repair.
The Council is therefore proposing to sell 15 Gertrude Street and 1-9 St Mark's Road to help fund some of the budget shortfall created by the Government’s new funding formula. The services provided in Gertrude Street will move to a new local site in the south of the borough, and services in St Mark's Road will move to a new site in the north of the borough. Therefore, moving the services currently in the building is not part of this consultation. The Council is investing in the new locations to make sure they are fit for purpose, meet resident needs and deliver value for money.
We want your views on our proposal to sell these two buildings. If you disagree, we want your views on what we should do with the buildings instead and how else the Council could find equivalent savings or income.
