Draft Design Guide for Mansard Extensions

Overview

We are consulting on a Draft Design Guide for Mansard Extensions and would welcome your views.

The Guide aims to help householders create more space in their homes by extending upwards in a way that is appropriate to the borough’s special historic character.

It does not constitute formal planning policy but provides clarity on the use of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), August 2026 Policy L2 which includes support for upward extensions. Following the principles set out in the guide is likely to result in a positive outcome where planning permission is required.
