Whether the Council should progress design work and implement streetscape improvements on the section of Stratford Road between Marloes Road and Allen Street.
You said
Sixty - three responses were received to the consultation, of which 72 per cent supported the proposals in full or in part, with 28 per cent objecting to the proposals.
We did
In March 2026, after consideration of all responses to the consultation, the Council decided to implement the scheme with some amendments to address key concerns raised in consultation:
- Retain more Pay by Phone parking capacity on Stratford Road and seek to provide additional capacity on Marloes Road at the junction with Stratford Road to achieve a neutral overall parking impact.
- Reduce the length of the footway extensions at the entrance to Blithfield Street by three metres on both sides of the street in order to limit the impact on parking capacity on the street.

The Council is committed to creating attractive, welcoming, and distinctive places through our Amazing Spaces streetscape improvement programme. We believe Stratford Road has great potential to become one of our future Amazing Spaces and we’d like your feedback on our initial ideas for improving the area.

Why Stratford Road?
Stratford Road’s distinctive character and vibrant mix of independent shops, cafés, and restaurants make it a much-loved local destination. In recent years, outdoor seating introduced through our Summertime Licensing initiative has helped to enhance the street’s lively atmosphere and strengthen its identity as a welcoming place for residents and visitors. By focusing improvements here, we aim to enhance this neighbourhood centre while improving accessibility, safety, and the overall experience for everyone who uses the street.
Our Initial Concept
We’ve developed a concept plan exploring how Stratford Road could be enhanced to create a more attractive, comfortable, and enjoyable environment for everyone.
Key features of the concept include:
- Wider footways to improve pedestrian comfort and allow space for outdoor dining and greening where appropriate.
- Upgrading footways, carriageways, and kerb lines with high-quality natural stone. The specific type of stone will be determined at a later stage, subject to support for this scheme.
- Optimising the layout to make more effective use of parking space while providing a dedicated loading area.
- Introducing one-way westbound working between Marloes Road and Allen Street, while keeping Radley Mews and Blithfield Street two-way.
- Making it easier and safer to cross the road by improving dropped-kerb crossings on side roads and a raised junction at the Marloes Road entry.
