Walmer Road Walking and Cycling Improvements
Overview
Enabling more walking and cycling is one of the Council’s borough transport objectives.
We are consulting on providing an improved crossing point for pedestrians on Walmer Road and a new cycle path between Portland Road and Walmer Road. Please read the following information carefully before filling in our consultation survey no later than 15 November 2026.
The proposals include:
- converting the stepped area between Portland Road and Walmer Road into a new bi-directional cycle path, with a new planted area to the south of the path, beside the retaining wall. The cycle path will feature central bollards to prevent motor vehicle access and clear signage designating the path as cyclists only.
- An extension of the eastern kerb on Walmer Road to provide access to a new raised informal crossing point. The footway extension is intended to provide more space for cyclists and pedestrians to wait to cross, reduce the crossing distance for cyclists and pedestrians and improve visibility between cyclists and pedestrians and vehicles.
- An informal raised crossing point, aiming to reduce vehicle speeds as they approach the crossing point, improving access to Avondale Park.
- Proposed removal of two Pay by Phone parking bays to the western kerb, south of the proposed crossing point and removal of one metre of Residents’ parking bay to the eastern kerb, south of the proposed crossing point to increase visibility.
A plan of the proposals is available below.
